Virtual Centre of Excellence (VCE) in mobile communications

The Virtual Centre of Excellence (VCE) in mobile communications was established during early 1997 following the UK Government's Technology Foresight Challenge. The distributed research funds total 3.132 Million Pounds over 3 years, which are funded at a level of 1.5 Million Pounds by EPSRC and 2.32 Million Pounds are contributed towards the research costs by about 25 major international Mobile Radio Communications Companies. The Group was awarded funding to conduct research in Intelligent Wireless Video Communications under the auspices of the Terminals Working Group. Four UK Universities contribute to this Working Group and a total of seven UK Universities are involved in the Mobile VCE programme. For further details on current research in progress and for various videotelephony demonstrations please refer to http://www-mobile.ecs.soton.ac.uk.
