Abstract:

With the advent of Asynchroneous Transfer Mode (ATM) networks and thanks to the improvement of algorithms for video sequence coding, providing new wireless services such as interactive or broadcast video communications is more realistic than ever. In this report a model is proposed for replacing the video codec in networking studies. The model proposed has been tested for sources with a mean bitrate in the range of 10Kb/s to 10Mb/s. The standard frame sizes investigated are the International Telecommunications Union's (ITU) 352 x 352-pixel Common Intermediate Format (CIF), 176 x 144-pixel Quarter CIF (QCIF), 704 x 576-pixel 4CIF and 128 x 96-pixel Sub-QCIF (SQCIF). The video codec schemes investigated are the ITU's H.263 codec and the Motion Pictures Expert Group's MPEG2 scheme. Here we propose two different solutions for each codec scheme.
